Proctor Art Gallery!

I'm super excited to be joining the amazing group of artists who are represented at the Proctor Art Gallery in Tacoma, WA! This is my first experience with a gallery, and I'm thrilled to have been given this opportunity.

The Proctor Art Gallery is a really warm, inviting, and comfortable space - it's not one of those stark white, cold galleries. The artists at the PAG are all incredibly talented and kind people, and their work covers the full spectrum of art media - glass artwork, jewelry, pottery, paintings of all kinds, etc. I'm truly honored to be joining them!

I'll be hanging my paintings in the gallery on January 5 - it's a great way to start the new year. If you're in the area, I hope you can stop by and visit! :)

Here's an article from January 2009 about the opening of the gallery: Tacoma News Tribune

My computer is alive again!

For this buffalo painting, I combined my paint with a molding paste instead of acrylic gel - the molding paste has a bit of a fluffier texture to it, which I thought would lend itself well to this snowy scene. I used a toothbrush and palette knives to flick snowflakes onto the canvas (at least half of the paint flicked backwards onto me). It's a rather stark painting, but I like the image of a lone bison trudging through a blizzard. I've often felt like I've been in this same situation...simply putting one foot in front of the other on a journey into the white void, where no outcome seems certain...but still, we persevere.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
-Mary Oliver, from "Wild Geese"

Show in Tacoma, WA

I'm excited to be hanging my art at the Northern Pacific Coffee Company in Tacoma, WA starting on November 30! The NPCC is a great venue with wine, beer, super tasty food, open-mic nights, regular live music, books, etc...sort of a one-stop-shop for the art-inclined crowd. David and Dan in Blackbird Pie have played a number of shows there.

In other news, my computer has been on the fritz lately, making updates sporadic (particularly on my web site). Hopefully the situation will be rectified soon...I wonder if my iTunes music collection may have finally taken a toll on my computer's 8-year-old hard drive (nothing drives me crazier than planned obsolescence!)

The Road Home - SOLD

I realized that I haven't given much attention on canvas to Montana's rivers yet...expect more to come!

I should mention, by the way, that I have an overwhelming passion for American Transcendentalist writings (as well as the work of geniuses like Wordsworth and Coleridge, who were hugely influential on the philosophy of the Transcendentalists). I can't get enough of it.

I see what was, and is, and will abide;
Still glides the Stream, and shall for ever glide;
The Form remains, the Function never dies;
While we, the brave, the mighty, and the wise,
We Men, who in our morn of youth defied
The elements, must vanish;—be it so!
Enough, if something from our hands have power
To live, and act, and serve the future hour;
And if, as toward the silent tomb we go,
Through love, through hope, and faith's transcendent dower,
We feel that we are greater than we know.
-William Wordsworth, "Valedictory Sonnet to the River Duddon"

I've lamented a lot on this blog about the changing face of my hometown...I've never liked change much, especially when it involves farmland and rolling prairie being replaced with apartments and cookie-cutter mansion communities. One of the best parts about growing up in Billings was the rural quality to the city (despite its being the most populated city in Montana)...you could drive for 5 or 10 minutes and wind up amidst farmland and undeveloped fields. You could actually find some solitude in a relatively 'big' city. Piece by piece I'm seeing familiar barns and century-old farmhouses being torn down as the West End of Billings keeps expanding outward.

When we were young we used to walk out in those fields
And run forever in the backyard woods
Now the old trails disappear in neighborhoods
With streets named after what's gone for good
-Storyhill, "Paradise Lost"

Autumn certainly hasn't been shy about arriving this year. It's been so windy at times that I've been covering the chicken coop up at night with a tarp (that's right, we have 2 chickens in a home-made coop in our backyard!).

I love Fall. I love the colors and the crispness in the air and getting to put on layers of scarves. I especially love how the smell of leaves on the ground can transport me back in time to days when I would jump into a pile of leaves. When did I stop jumping?

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reaped furrow sound asleep,
Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers;
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cider-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.

-John Keats, "Ode to Autumn"
